On Tuesday I had surgery. In 2006 I had my right hip replaced with a fabulous metal device. Unfortunately it was on the list of recalled hips that Johnson and Johnson manufactured under the name DePuy. I loved my new hip. It took me everywhere. It didn't hurt - but apparently it was causing me to have a bad reaction in my hip muscles and joint and it had to come out.
I respect my doctor - I personally think he's the best Orthopedic Surgeon in the world (and many agree with me.) He has studied the issues and has perfected the revision surgery so, although it's not a piece of cake or a walk in the park - it's not that bad. His name is Dr. James Van Horne. When he told me I had to have the new surgery I wasn't happy but I trust him. I finally cleared my schedule enough to get through the recovery period.
This blog is not about the surgery or my hip. This blog is about oatmeal cookies.
Our local hospital has menus in each room and a patient or helper may order meals. Dinner Wednesday night was a chicken breast, salad, and an oatmeal cookie with raisins for dessert.
I marked it with an X as you can see.
When the tray came - this is what I received - A bowl of oatmeal, a bowl of raisins and a packet of brown sugar topping along with a pat of butter.
I think it must be a new form of physical therapy for patients. Baking one's own cookies could be quite fulfilling and certainly time consuming in an otherwise boring evening of watching the nothingness on television. The only problem - they didn't bring me an "Easy Bake Oven" with the ingredients.
These cookie ingredients came with the chicken and the salad. I wonder what the kitchen was thinking. It was the talk of my wing. All of the nurses had to come and see. We laughed alot.
Maybe that's the point.
Later, the young man who had brought my tray found me a package of Grandma's Oatmeal Cookies and much later one of my nurses brought me a peanut butter cookie from their coffee cart. Kindness abounds at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center.
Or maybe that's the point.

What a great story, Hyla! Sorry you had to have the hip re-done. What a pain, in many ways. But you found humor, and so unbelievable! Love it. Maybe that X was too large and they thought you'd rejected the cookie and would love the ingredients instead? Whatever. Made me laugh.
