Halloween Candy In The Summertime

The song goes - "In the summertime when the weather is fine...." - well the weather in the summertime is hot. Pretty much no matter where you are it's hot. And hot is not condusive to preserving chocolate. Chocolate is supposed to melt at approximately body temperature. Which means 98.6 degrees - or a bit cooler I think. So if the weather outside is beyond 98.6 degrees farenheit (I cannot begin to decipher what it would be centigrade - sorry) well, it's s'mores in the back seat without the marshmellows or grahams. And that's definitely not a good thing.

And yet - today I saw chocolate in the aisles of a retail store. Lots of chocolate. And other confections - all wrapped in small individual packages ready for tricker or treating delighting. But let's face it - we love the small confections wrapped in small packages. Because it makes us think we are just having a nibble of our favorite candies. Buying the large size Big Hunk is no longer acceptable in modern society. That is, if one is concerned about the amount of corn syrup in one's diet. The small, tastefully wrapped Halloween treaties are by far the more politically correct in between meal time snack items.

It all started with Baby Ruth and perhaps some tootsie rolls in my youth. then came the Tylenol scare and Halloween changed - forever. I used to trick or treat for Unicef - carting a cardboard box in which i would garner change from the neighborhood - but today we don't have neighborhoods much. My neighborhood resides on my computer with my email pals.

ok so back to chocolate....there are chocolate holidays as my son is wont to remind me. I think the first is valentines day, then perhaps easter - then maybe a sneak at mother's day and on to the fourth of july which is anything but chocolate. which is probably totally what is wrong with the current version of the fourth of july - and then hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ok i think summer is out so the next truly is halloween and then thanksgiving (who can forget chomping off a chocolate turkey head) and finally christmas which is chocolate laden among other things.

ah would the world revolve around chocolate holidays instead of things like tax day or labor day or memorial day - things have happened which are not celebrated with chocolate - like memorial day in which we think to remember the people who aren't with us anymore. and many of them loved chocolate. like my mother. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - she loved chocolate.

i caught her once drinking out of a bottle of whiskey - right after i had my first child and she was nervous. so was i but i was nursing so no whiskey for me - but beer was okay and i loved that. nursing and beer. wonder what people would have thought if i would have sat in the store aisle nursing and eating chocolate 0r better yet - nursing and drinking beer.

better not think about things like that - we live in a non-diverse community with non-diverse thinking - like chocolate and nursing all in one sentence. is that a sentence... i mean living in a non-diverse community that would condemn chocolate and nursing in one sentence -
no it's not a sentence - i chose the community because i love the river. and the people - well some of the people.

and so goes the chocolate....melted in puddles in the warmth of the friendships.
